Rites of Passage: A Transformational Matrix for Developmental Coaching—A White Paper

“Every positive change — every jump to a higher level of energy and awareness — involves a rite of passage. Each time to ascend to a higher rung on the ladder of personal evolution, we must go through a period of discomfort, of initiation.”

— Dan Millman

A Rite of Passage describes any ceremony or event marking an important transitional stage in someone’s life, especially birth, puberty, marriage and death. So too might it be employed to describe the transitional time of coaching where a client transforms to a new developmental level—a new life phase.

This white paper sets out to align understanding, research and cultural wisdom from social anthropology, human developmental theory, eco-mythics and modern coaching practice into a over-arching model of transformation, one which bridges both modern Western empirical and traditional animistic worldviews.
