Paper: Rites of Passage in Coaching

— Dan Millman

A Rite of Passage describes any ceremony or event marking an important transitional stage in someone’s life, especially birth, puberty, marriage and death. So too might it be employed to describe the transitional time of coaching where a client transforms to a new developmental level—a new life phase.

This white paper and the accompanying commentary document sets out to align understanding, research and cultural wisdom from social anthropology, human developmental theory, mythics and modern coaching practice into a over-arching model of transformation, one which bridges both modern Western empirical and traditional animistic worldviews.
